To the east of the region runs the Apennine chain. The mainly limestone nature of these ridges means they are great water reservoirs, giving rise to many springs. An area rich in river courses, almost entirely part of the Tiber river basin, has carved these mountains and over the centuries has formed deep gorges such as the Valnerina, marked by the Nera river, the Tiber’s main tributary, which is enriched by the waters of the Velino, with which it joins by means of the Marmore Falls.
The region also has two lakes, Trasimeno and Lake Piediluco. Trasimeno, to the north, is the fourth largest in Italy and in its waters three islands rise: Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore and Isola Polvese.
Lake Piediluco, near Terni, lies at 365 metres above sea level and is set in a picturesque landscape, surrounded by evergreen hills and ancient villages.
