For some years now, the Solemn Pontifical Mass has not been held at the Basilica of Saint Valentine, but at the Cathedral of Terni. For the transfer of the Holy Patron, the faithful, parish groups, occasional tourists and the whole city accompany the Sacred Relics from the Valentinian Hill toward the city center to reach the cathedral. It is a route that crosses the streets of the city center a few days before February 14 and the same route is retraced in the opposite direction after the Solemn Pontifical Mass, to return to the Basilica. Many Ternans follow the two routes, led in the front row by the Bishop of Terni and the local authorities with the city banner, who greet the participants in procession and from window balconies as the cortege passes.
The event is often enhanced by lit candles on terraces and along the route, local historical parades displaying flags and banners which, despite the coldest month of the year, warm the heart and soul of the faithful who, devoted to Saint Valentine, recite prayers and liturgical hymns in an atmosphere of devotion and folklore.
