Since ancient times, the Umbrian people have considered Christianity a point of reference not only from a religious perspective, but also as a driving cultural force for local communities. Over the centuries, places of worship and pilgrimage destinations have developed throughout the region. These places are of notable importance due to the numerous Christian figures and saints who have exemplified social, cultural, and religious values. Typical are historical-religious reenactments, which in Umbria, more than elsewhere, alternate with artistic and cultural events of ancient and recent origins. These folkloristic and popular festivals combine fragments of pagan origins and Christian devotion, historical elements from different eras, and new social and cultural activities of our time. The city of Terni, originally a rural and artisanal city, transformed after the unification of Italy into a major industrial center, and the establishment of large-scale industries has brought about a radical urban, architectural, and cultural transformation, unlike other Umbrian cities. |
