Basilica Sanctuary

Cimitero di San Valentino

After the beheading of St. Valentine, a cemetery of pagan and later Christian origin originally developed in the place where he was buried. There were many people who after their death wished to be buried near the burial place of the saint.

A small church was built next to the cemetery for the worship of St. Valentine as early as the third century, later enlarged and destroyed over the centuries, up to the present building where today it is possible to pray in front of the urn of St. Valentine.

Currently, inside the small museum, a small part of the original masonry of the cemetery is visible. The precise location of the cemetery is between the current Basilica and the original convent of St. Valentine now owned by the Municipality of Terni. This part is open for pilgrims and visitors on the occasion of visits to the Basilica.
